Your flowers have been grown with lots of daily care over the course of many months. They were grown without pesticides, they are freshly picked and haven't travelled far from our micro farm in Sevenoaks. They are fully conditioned to have the best possible vase life and wrapped without plastics in recyclable materials. Now it is your turn to care for them!
> If your flowers have been out of water then it is worth cutting the stems again, at an angle, removing about 1cm.
> Remove any leaves that will be under the waterline of your vase.
> Arrange in your flowers in a vase and keep the water deep.
> Place the flowers away from direct sunlight and heat sources such as radiators, ovens and fireplaces.
The cooler the room the longer they will last. It is also worth placing away from your fruit bowl especially bananas!
> Check the water daily and replace every two-three days or when you notice the water not looking clear.
> Remove any old leaves, spent blooms or stems to prevent any bacterial or fungal growth.
> Dahlias particularly are often rather beautiful in their senescence so don't throw them away to quickly.
As with many flowers, Dahlias can be toxic to cats and dogs so please do keep them clear of your pets. Don't let this put you off enjoying you flowers we just want you to be aware those adorable pets shouldn't munch on them!
Fortunately the effects of ingestion by cats and dogs are short lived and tend to be relatively mild. They may exhibit some gastro upset and perhaps mild dermatitis.
Our animals have sensibly never tried to eat them, apart from the chickens that is, and the dahlia patch is the kitty's favourite spot for a kip.
